Don’ts to follow in Iceland.
- Do not base your trip entirely on Northern Lights
Most of the year Iceland remains cloudy, which means even if the activity is really strong, you cannot see Aurora Borealis. Hence, plan your day suitably. Keep the spotting of Northern Lights as a dessert to the whole main course of panoramic natural sites in Iceland. Give enough time to each site, get your camera with its waterproof protection to click plethora of pictures and just enjoy unreal scenery.
- Do Not depend on tourist packages- RENT A CAR
Well, I know it is always easy to book a tourist package that will take care of your itinerary, will ensure to get you better discounts and also liberates you from driving around. But but but..I have to mention here, driving was one of my most memorable experiences in Iceland. Driving is simple and easy in Iceland. The ring road circumferences the country and hence does not create any confusion. All the landmarks are properly marked and are quite easy to spot via a pre-downloaded google map. Even if it is raining or if it is pitch dark, driving was never a hindrance to my trip, it was always an aid.
- Do not drive more than the specified speed limit
Be a responsible tourist. Do not drive above the specified speed limit. Please maintain the sovereignty and integrity of the country. If you drive faster, it is equally uncomfortable and inconvenient for the other drivers (if you find many..!) Also, there are number of bridges that you have to take care of. Since these are not double lane bridges, hence, please check and signal the car coming from the opposite direction.
- Do not halt in between the road to take snaps
Now I know Iceland would give you couple of excuses and reasons to click some of the best shots and to halt your car where no parking is available. It seems convenient too because you would not find too many cars or buses around. Having said that, do not take this as a liberty to stop anywhere to click pictures. It is violation of the traffic rules and is also dangerous for the other cars that might not be able to spot you because of numerous blind cuts and blind turns.
- Do not compromise on winter wear and carry water proof jackets
All the fashion stylists in the house, it’s time to experiment with your water proof and wind proof jackets. As you would be visiting a lot of waterfalls and beaches, it is highly advisable to carry water proof and wind proof wear. Iceland remains windy for major part of the year with frequent uncalled rains. Make sure to carry gloves, caps and extra pair of woollen socks. I still remember it was so chilly and windy at the Glacial Lagoon that it was difficult for us to get our fingers naked to take the pictures. Also, we so wished to stay longer at Black Sand Beach, but weather just did not cooperate. Nonetheless, we made a second visit to few places!
- Do not look out for eating joints- survive on Supermarkets
If you are a budget traveller and accommodation and car rentals have already left you spooky by this time, the only scope for you to save some money is on your meals. We booked Airbnb to get a functional kitchen and used to cook dinner there. I have to confess; Iceland is one of the most expensive of the Scandinavian countries and humbly proves that nothing better comes for free!!
- Do not litter
Enough said. It is a natural beauty that needs to be preserved and reserved for the ages to come. Maintain its equilibrium by throwing garbage only in bins, whenever and wherever you find them.
- Do not get emotional with your camera
I know, I know, Iceland leaves no stone unturned when it comes to giving you an opportunity to click the best of the pictures. But, please be careful and attentive. Plan not to die while taking these pictures; after all, you need to remain alive to post them on your social media accounts.
